Abstract

Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) upholds the agenda of integrating the naqli (revealed) and aqli (reasoned) knowledge as one of the main university’s agendas as enshrined in the philosophy and vision of this university. There are many works prepared by the classical and modern Muslim scholars, which describe the concept and the importance of this integration. From utilising the qualitative research design and content analysis method on Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah, this article focuses on the discourse of this integration of naqli and aqli knowledge. Ibn Khaldun (732-808H/1332-1406M) is a scholar par excellence in the field of history and philosophy in the Muslim civilization. Whilst, Muqaddimah is Ibn Khaldun’s magnum opus, which is until today recognised as a main reference in the study of civilization, history and scholarship. In the Muqaddimah, Ibn Khaldun presents his pragmatic concept and examples of integration based on his epistemological notes of the Maghrib and its neighbouring areas in the 16th and 17th century. There are several scholars, who claim that Ibn Khaldun applies a secular paradigm for his Muqaddimah, however, this article found a different finding from this scholarly view. This article, then, concludes that Ibn Khaldun is a proponent and practitioner of the concept of integration of naqli and aqli, based on his epistemological discourse, as found in his Muqaddimah.

Abstrak

Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) mengangkat agenda pengintegrasian ilmu-ilmu naqli dan aqli sebagai antara agenda utama universiti melalui falsafah dan visi USIM. Terdapat pelbagai karya oleh ilmuwan klasik dan moden yang menghuraikan berkenaan konsep dan kepentingan integrasi ilmu-ilmu naqli dan aqli ini. Menerusi rekabentuk kajian kualitatif dan menggunakan kaedah kajian kandungan, artikel ini memfokuskan wacana integrasi ilmu-ilmu naqli dan aqli ini, menerusi tinjauan ke atas Muqaddimah Ibn Khaldun. Ibn Khaldun (732-808H/1332-1406M) adalah seorang tokoh sejarawan dan ahli falsafah Islam yang terkenal dalam tamadun Islam. Manakala, Muqaddimah pula adalah magnum opus beliau yang sehingga ke hari ini menjadi rujukan utama dalam kajian tamadun, sejarah, dan keilmuan. Dalam Muqaddimah, Ibn Khaldun mengemukakan konsep dan contoh yang pragmatik mengenai amalan pengintegrasian ini berdasarkan catatan epistemologi di Maghrib dan kawasan-kawasan sekitarnya pada kurun ke 16 dan 17 Masihi. Meskipun terdapat beberapa sarjanawan moden yang mendakwa Ibn Khaldun menggunapakai pandangan sarwa yang sekular dalam menulis Muqaddimah, dapatan artikel ini menemui dapatan kajian yang berbeza. Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahawa Ibn Khaldun merupakan pendokong dan pengamal konsep integrasi ilmu-ilmu naqli dan aqli berdasarkan wacana epistemologi yang dimuatkan oleh Ibn Khaldun dalam Muqaddimahnya.
